Transition secondaire/supérieur : causes d’échec en mathématiques dans les filières scientifiques de l’Université de Ouagadougou.

Abstract : The transition secondary education / university education in mathematics education is a source of failure among students. This transition between two mathematical cultures (Artigue, 2004) has been the subject of numerous studies worldwide (Praslon, 2000; Corriveau, 2007; Najar, 2010; Fulvi, 2010). Burkina Faso is no exception to the rule and the University of Ouagadougou knows high rates of failure in mathematics in its first year of science courses. The objective of our study is to investigate the causes of failure in mathematics in secondary / university transition in the sciences options at the University of Ouagadougou. After a review of research on the transition and our theoretical framework we have blamed representations and beliefs of the actors, the gap in the teaching methods and programs, as well as the gap between the requirements in formalism and in demonstration as identified causes of failures. Our investigations with the actors (teachers and learners) and analysis of educational programs and tasks given to learners of both levels of education helped to highlight a strong gap in the methods and curricula. Secondary and university education seem to work in isolation, creating difficulties of adaptation of learners. This analysis has also revealed representations and beliefs hindering learning of mathematics in the transition between the two levels of education. Requirements in formalism and demonstration experience a significant increase in the secondary / university transition.
