L’effet multiplicateur du plurilinguisme sur la diversité des façons de dire

Abstract : In plurilingual communication areas, the variation inherent in languages becomes further enriched and diversified. In this article, we observe what happens with speakers in Abidjan who communicate on the basis of a plurilingual repertoire, in order to apprehend the diversity of expressions and cognitive functioning in the languages in contact. After a discussion of the heterogeneity and multiplicity of ways of speaking in terms of linguistic variation, we study the ways in which a referent is identified in discourse, the connections made between clauses, and the expression of irrealis in Ivory Coast French, Baule and Jula. Finally, we discuss how discursive practices initially diversify, then become routine and finally lead to linguistic change.
